Description -   As far as Black Dragon Canyon goes, we did it a few years ago as a  shuttle, going west on 70 to a pull out between milepost markers  145-144 and stashing a car at the parking lot for the eastern end of  the canyon. There are a bunch of petroglyphs in the canyon, so there  is official parking there. We then got back on 70 and went to exit  129 with bikes and riders. Take the frontage road back alongside the  highway to get to Sink hole Flats, park and start riding on dirt  roads. You take a left then eventually a right to drop into the  canyon proper, you can see it steepening on the right... , and you'll  ride the canyon West to East  as it is pretty much all downhilll in  this direction. It is dirt road for a couple of miles through grazing  land with some fun high speed sections with dips you can launch, then  it drops into the drainage, following the wash in an ever narrowing  canyon. The walls get relatively tight, perhaps 70 feet apart and a  couple of hundred feet tall on each side, quite dramatic. the riding  is pretty tame, some small drops if you look for them , but primarily  creek bed gravel/sand riding. After a few turns and twists you come  up to the petroglyphs- a whole wall of them, - on your left. You  continue straight to your car, go back and pick up the bike carrying  rig.
Now, at this lower lot, you can ride up an obvious ramp on the  north-east side of the canyon, that climbs way up to a huge slickrock  plateau that goes on as far as you can see. Some of it leads to a  cliff edge that overlooks the canyon, a pretty good spot to heckle  the petroglyph viewers... anyhoo, you could spend a lot of time  exploring the slickrock. We didn't see any markings or blazes, so be  careful not to get turned around...
In General, the San Rafael swell is freakin' dramatic. As you  approach it on 70, there doesn't look like there is anyway to  penetrate it. Just these huge fins of rock reaching up hundreds of  feet from the desert floor. Black Dragon of course winds through  series of these fins... and that slickrock section explores the  ridgeline.
