Marking the 100th anniversary of statehood, the
111 mile trail represents the diversity of South Dakota. It crosses prairie
grasslands, climbs in the Black Hills high country, and goes around
beautiful lakes. It begins at the Elk Mountain Campground and finishes at
the Bear Butte State Park all located in the Black hills. It goes through
Custer State Park which has several mountain bike trails separate form the
Centennial Trail. It is predominately a hiking trail that runs north to south through the Black Hills so is a more rugged, moderate to difficult trail. It offers several trailheads where one can do a specific section usually as a point to point. The section through the Black Elk Wilderness does not allow wheeled vehicles but there is an alternate route posted. On a recommendation we did the Samelius Trailhead to the Dakota Point Trailhead section based on a recommendation for a local. BAD MISTAKE! It started off promising with technical rock sections but then it got real ugly - very steep long sections with huge boulders that one could not possible ride up. Some of the rocks were so big one had to carry the bike- too steep to push the bike. I have never carried my bike that much- had to do that up 3 mountain passes. The only redeeming thing was the downhills were fun- steep and technical. It took us over 3 hours to complete that 8 mile section!
