1160 Camino Cruz Blanca Santa Fe, NM Description - The loop we choose was near perfect, on the topo map below we rode the loop counter clockwise. Starting from St Johns college the trail is wide and buff but narrows as it winds through a shallow canyon area. Some hike a bike before you hit the first road, but also some nice sections with technical switchbacks. After crossing the road the trail goes up forever but is 99% rideable by most, I suggest you bring some lungs. There was even a few breaks and one split in the trail for easier route, which we took. The slightest bit of terrain made this climb technical in spots as you are grinding in granny 1 or 2, lifting over some small roots or water bars proved to be difficult. Near the top the trail narrowed to nice technical singletrack with some really nice sections, some "impossible" switchbacks, some doable.. Couple mandatory hike a bikes, but not too bad.. Once on the top there are some nice views of the Santa Fe area and dale ball north trail system. From here you can either turn around and go back (easier route), or continue on the loop. The first section was VERY steep and a little loose, but all ride able. Some killer singletrack! A few worthy rock sections that demanded some commitment and moderately exposed. As the trail heads toward Picacho peak, it becomes a little more groomed and eventually the dale ball trail signs at intersections started appearing (note a few are missing!!).. THe dale ball south trails are amazing, much more interesting than dale ball north, same landscaped feel with more technical sections, steeper bench cut and some really cool shrubs, cactus flowers & stuff.. Quite a few short hike a bike sections usually through switchback areas, which I imagine is good, keeps the traffic to a minimum. By taking all the trails we could on the way down the trails really conserved our vertical. A good bang for the buck as I say.. Finished up with a ride up Dorothy Stewart (HH's cousin?) which was a little loose, but mostly rideable.. Great ride, loved this loop!! Loops - Start at St johns, up atalya, easier route, to 41 (not posted on trail) to 36-35-40 right turn towards 32 - 37-38-33 back on Dorothy S. |
