Directions: Take 1-94 east from Medora to
Belfield. Drive north on US-85 to Fairfield- about 21 miles. About 3.5 miles
north of Fairfield turn left onto Magpie Road (FSR 712). Follow 712 about
15.5 miles. Turn right into Magpie campground (primitive). Trail is at the
end of the campground. Description: This is a very remote section of 100% singletrack which traverses through some of the most scenic areas of the Badlands. There is such a diversity of terrain; high prairie grasslands, aspens and views that stretch to the horizon. And it contains the most scenic feature of the entire trail; Devil’s Pass. Devil’s Pass is a narrow sliver of upland that is the only connection between the badlands along Whitetail Creek to the south and Magpie Creek to the north. It offers beautiful views of the rugged badlands on either side. Loop: We did an out and back as we didn’t want to pay the steep price of the shuttle. We started at Magpie Camp (MM 58) and headed south to Devil’s Pass (MM 53) and just beyond. It was mostly a gradual climb so on the way back we had a lot of fun downhill. After a break from the 90 degree+ heat, we then went north from the camp to the junction of the Ice Caves Trail (MM61). The Ice Cave Trail climbs up 1.5 miles to the caves. We did not do this trail as we were near heat exhaustion and still had to backtrack to Magpie Camp. Bike shop: Dakota Cyclery in Medora which offers a shuttle service. 1-888-321-1218 or www.Dakotacyclery.com |
