As reviewed by Big Game...from his experience
as a slow but steady (but slow) x-c racer |
Directions - I'm not saying...riding is off-limits unless there's a race going on. If you want directions, go to the race site Description - This is strictly a race course. Don't go here unless there is a race or you'll jeopardize the race for everybody and then us x-c wienies will be sad Ok. The race loop: The start is a nasty bottleneck. Then there are greasy rocks. If there are more than 5 people in your division, a good portion will have to get off their bikes. The trail continues uphill kind of slow, kind of muddy (this course has never been dry). There are a bunch of short climbs that you can't bring any momentum into. The experts and pros get an extended singletrack section...there's actually a drop (ok, a 12" dropette). Lots of pine needles, rocks, you'll want a FS bike, if you got it. Then a long steady climb, kind of interesting. Then a long rocky downhill. More slab rock than baby heads. If you take it with speed, its going to break your arse. then a long steady climb and then into more piney woods with some mud, off-camber roots and a few rocks. A few more climbs and then a greasy small rock gardenette over a small bridge to the start/finish. Lap length is about 4 miles. For the Laurel City Loop, the race is run basically backwards. This race is brutal, especially in the heat. Either you finish, fake a mechanical to DNF or you suffer irreversable drain bamage from heat stroke. Masochist's delight. See you there.
