Buffalo Creek trails are just 45 minutes
outside of Denver. To get there, you take highway 285 to Pine Junction, turn
south (left) at the only stoplight in town. You'll start dropping elevation
quickly. After about eight miles, there is a turn off for Pine Valley Ranch.
This is the first place you can park and start riding the trails on the
North end of the system. If you continue past the town of Pine, you can
access the trails in the middle by parking at the ranger station just south
of the very tiny town of Buffalo Creek. At this point, you can ride up
Buffalo Creek Road to find the middle of the trail system. Finally, you can
continue past Buffalo Creek, up a very steep road, and park at the trail
system's Southernmost terminus on FR 550. This will give you immediate
access to the Colorado Trail. The Buffalo Creek trail system is a great place to get away from the city for a morning and be able to ride 10, 20, 30 miles of buff singletrack without ever crossing your path twice. Most of the trails are technically easy, with a few steep climbs. However, there are a few spots that offer some intermediate technicals. Two trails are famous for their granite slab riding: Baldy and Charlie's Cutoff. The good news is that these two can be linked to form a really fun 16 mile loop. Because of the gravelly nature of the trail surfaces, Buffalo Creek sheds water well and can be dry fairly early on in the spring. Here's a link to the park's website. There is a PDF with a map of the system (I couldn't get it to pull up for some reason). http://www.fs.fed.us/r2/psicc/spl/biking.shtml |
