Directions: From Spearfish take Highway 14-A to Spearfish Canyon. Turn right onto FSR 222. Drive 6 miles and turn right onto FSR 134. Drive 1.2 miles to trailheads on left.

Description: 100% singletrack through narrow canyons, meadows, aspens and ponderosa forests with two “moderate” climbs (one long and gradual, one steep) and tight twisty descents. Spectacular views of limestone cliffs complimented by the ambience of Little Spearfish Creek. The trail is designed for hikers, mountain bikers and horses. This is open range so don’t be surprised to see cattle wandering around. Also, watch for their “landmines” that are sometimes deposited on the trail!

Loop: One can do these trails separately but we decided to combine them for a bigger loop. One can also add the Old Baldy Trail for a “super loop”. We didn’t have time to add that one. Little Spearfish Trail is 6 miles and the Rimrock is bisected into an upper loop (4.7 miles) and a lower loop (3.2 miles). The upper loop is best for mountain bikers as it offers a gentler route out of Little Spearfish Canyon.
Start at the Rimrock trailhead and follow to the intersection of Little Spearfish. Go to the right for a counterclockwise direction loop. Follow the trail markers- there are other “spurs” off the main trail which are nothing more than “herd” paths. Once you get to the dirt road (222), go right on the road for a couple hundred feet and turn left onto the Rimrock Trail (don’t turn left on the road- that is the ending of the Spearfish Trail). Follow the trail through the meadow until you get to an intersection. Take the left upward- that is the upper loop. Follow the trail until you get back to the place where you started the counterclockwise loop. Take the right to backtrack to the car. You can access Old Baldy Trail form the area where you parked your car.
